Annual Living Cost Calculator
The monthly number misses the costs that arrive once a year. Add them explicitly and see the true annual figure.
A return flight home is a recurring cost, not a one-off. Count the trips you will actually take, not the ones you hope to take.
The annual lump sum problem
Insurance, visa renewal and flights are predictable but lumpy. If they all land in the same quarter, a monthly budget that works on average can still run out of cash. Divide the annual extras by twelve and set that amount aside monthly, or keep a sinking fund for each line.
What belongs in extras
Anything paid less than monthly: professional fees, subscriptions billed annually, a trip home, a tax filing, an annual health check, a visa renewal, and the replacement of things that wear out. The list is personal; the point is to name it.
Frequently asked questions
Should savings be included?
This calculator covers spending. Add your savings target separately, as a line in the monthly budget.
How many trips home should I budget?
The number you will realistically take given leave, cost and family obligations — usually one, sometimes two.
Does the contingency replace an emergency fund?
No. The contingency absorbs budget variance; the emergency fund covers job loss, illness or a sudden return.
